Our Pastor

Meet Pastor Caleb Janson

Caleb grew up in a rural farming community in central Minnesota and attended the University of Northwestern, St. Paul, in St. Paul, MN for his undergraduate degree. During that time he began to discover the riches of the Reformed understanding of Scripture. This discovery sparked in Caleb a passion for helping people see Christ as their only comfort in life and in death. He subsequently attended Westminster Seminary in California where he received his MDiv. He has been serving Gig Harbor United Reformed Church since November 2020.

Caleb and his wife, McKenzie, are blessed with a beautiful daughter, Margot. As a family they enjoy being active outdoors, reading, and spending time with others.

Caleb would love to discuss with you what it means to belong to a Reformed church. Feel free to email, call, or better yet, meet him for a cup of coffee!

Our Elders

Meet Elder Tony Gilbert

Tony grew up moving between 5 different states and 13 schools. In 1991 he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. As a Navy fighter pilot he flew the FA-18 Hornet and F-5 Tiger II. Tony was the Commanding Officer of a Navy fighter squadron and a Naval Air Facility. He retired as a Navy Captain after 26 years. Since 2017 he flies as a commercial airline pilot and is currently a Captain on the Airbus-320.

Tony was raised as a Catholic. During his last semester at Annapolis, Tony came to faith in Christ after hearing the gospel from a friend. Another friend led Tony to a PCA church where he began studying Reformed theology. Tony and Rachel met at a small group study and were married in 1993. During their 13th move in 2019 they were led to Gig Harbor URC by a friend who is a URCNA pastor. Tony and Rachel were looking for a Reformed, confessional, and kindhearted church with a love for Jesus. They have four adult children: Joshua, Grace, Faith, and Josiah. Tony is available for any conversation or questions.

Meet Elder John Whitt

John Whitt has been an elder at GHURC since 2022. He is originally from Alabama and moved to Gig Harbor in 2012. He works as a Pediatric Intensivist at the local children’s hospital. He is married to Ashley and they have four daughters.

John has a Baptist background but has become convinced of the biblical truth of confessional reformed churches especially as summarized in the Three Forms of Unity. Desiring to be able to invite their friends and neighbors to a local, warm, and confessional Reformed church, John and Ashley have been with GHURC since its first Bible studies in 2018.

Meet Elder John Dautel

John was born and raised on Long Island, NY, and attended University of Michigan where he received his degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation he took a job in California, working in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, where John met Kathi. They were married in 1984, living in the Bay Area and later in San Diego.

John was raised in the Congregational Church but fell away in college. He and Kathi began attending church again after their first daughter was born. In San Diego the family started listening to James Boice and R.C. Sproul on the radio, learning about Reformed theology. They attended Presbyterian churches prior to joining the Escondido URC in 2018. The URC has been especially useful in cementing their Reformed theology through sound biblical preaching and teaching of the Heidelberg Catechism. Since relocating to Washington in 2021, John and Kathi have attended Gig Harbor URC along with their four daughters and son-in-law.

Our Deacon

Meet Deacon Britton Cox

Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Britton grew up attending many different types of churches. His family eventually settled in the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, in which Britton was baptized and confirmed as a young adult. Now as a member of the United Reformed Church, Britton has an even greater appreciation of the continental Reformed doctrines as taught in the Three Forms of Unity.

Britton and his wife, Sarah, moved to the Puget Sound area in 2020 for his job as a mechanical engineer with the US Navy. As a family, they enjoy working on home improvement projects, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.
